Lorenzo Musetti: Italy's exceptional talent with the one-handed backhand

The Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti hit his first shots on a tennis court at the age of four. Lorenzo was born on 3 March 2002 in Carrara in Tuscany, the son of marble producer Francesco and his wife Sabrina. He has a special relationship with his grandfather, whom he describes as his hero.

Lorenzo's tennis is inspired by Roger Federer. He names clay as his preferred surface and Wimbledon as his favourite tournament. New York City, on the other hand, is his favourite city on tour. His coach since childhood has been Simone Tartarini, whom he also regards as his "second father". By his own account he does not believe he will ever change coach – since the 2026 season the team has been complemented by the experienced Spanish coach José Perlas.

In his free time, films are Lorenzo's great passion. If he were not a tennis player he would like to be an actor. He considers Al Pacino his favourite actor and "John Wick" his favourite film. In his spare time Lorenzo listens to classic rock and the Italian rapper Mondo Marcio. He also enjoys reading. His declared favourite book is "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini.

A Ferrari 458 as his dream car

Lorenzo has wide-ranging sporting interests. Besides tennis, basketball and football appeal to him most. In basketball he is a fan of LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. In football he roots for Juventus Turin. He names lasagne, pizza and gnocchi as his favourite foods. His dream car is the Ferrari 458.

Lorenzo is known for his varied attacking tennis and his extraordinary one-handed backhand. The 185-centimetre right-hander is one of the few professionals still playing a one-handed backhand: at the end of 2025 he was the only one-hander in the world's top 20. Lorenzo himself names his forehand as his favourite shot, supplemented by drop shots and serve and volley as tactical tools.

Key successes in Lorenzo Musetti's tennis career

In September 2018, at the age of 16, Lorenzo Musetti reached his first junior Grand Slam final at the US Open, which he lost to Thiago Seyboth Wild. He won his first Grand Slam title in 2019 in Melbourne in the boys' singles against Emilio Nava, 14-12 in the third-set tie-break. That took him to number 1 in the junior rankings during the year.

Lorenzo also achieved notable results among the professionals quickly. In September 2020 he reached the fourth round of the Masters tournament in Rome as a qualifier. On the way there, aged 18, he beat Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka and Japan's Kei Nishikori among others. A week later he won his first Challenger title in Forlì on clay against Thiago Monteiro, 7-6, 7-6. In March 2021 Lorenzo Musetti reached the semi-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco after beating top players Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov – only in the semi-finals did Stefanos Tsitsipas end his run.

From talent to top 10 player: Musetti's successes since 2022

Lorenzo Musetti won his first two ATP titles in 2022: in Hamburg, where he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final, and in Naples. With the Italian team he won the Davis Cup in 2023 and 2024 – the victorious 2024 squad also included Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, two more flagship names of the Italian tennis boom. In 2024 came his Grand Slam breakthrough: at Wimbledon he reached the semi-finals, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. At the Olympic Games in Paris he then won singles bronze, Italy's first Olympic tennis medal in 100 years.

2025 was his strongest clay-court season to date: the final at the Masters in Monte-Carlo against Carlos Alcaraz and the semi-finals at the French Open. At the end of the season he reached the final in Athens and made his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, where he beat Alex de Minaur among others. In January 2026 Lorenzo climbed to his career high of number 5 in the world and reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, which he had to retire from injured against Novak Djokovic while two sets up. Before that he had won his first ATP doubles title in Hong Kong alongside Lorenzo Sonego. After several injury breaks – including withdrawals from the French Open and Wimbledon in 2026 – he is currently number 14 in the ATP world rankings (as of early September 2026) and is working on his comeback. Italy therefore has three players in the world's top 15: alongside Musetti also Jannik Sinner and Flavio Cobolli.
