    Lorenzo Sonego: Italy's giant-killer

    Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego is one of the rising stars on the ATP Tour. With a surprise win over Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, he shot into the tennis world's spotlight as a “giant-killer” in October 2020.

    Lorenzo Sonego was born on 11 May 1995 in Turin. He didn't start playing tennis until he was eleven. He was coached by Gipo Arbino, who remains his coach to this day. His father Giorgio also had a big influence on his tennis career. His family also includes his mother Federica and his sister Francesca.

    Lorenzo's big tennis heroes growing up were Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In his free time he enjoys playing football and supports his favourite team, Torino FC. He prefers to spend his holidays in Sardinia, staying close to home.

    Lorenzo Sonego's ATP and Challenger successes

    The 1.91m right-hander Lorenzo Sonego played on the Futures tour from 2013 to 2015, winning two titles in singles and doubles in 2015. In 2016 he made the step up to the ATP Challenger Tour, where he claimed several Challenger titles, including one in October 2017 in St. Ulrich in South Tyrol, beating Germany's Tim Pütz 6-2, 6-2 on hard court.

    He also enjoyed success on clay, winning the final in Genoa in both September 2018 and 2019 – beating Dustin Brown 6-2, 6-1, and Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. As early as 2018, Sonego had competed at all four Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the second round at both the Australian Open and the US Open. A major milestone in Lorenzo Sonego's tennis career came with his title win on grass in Antalya in June 2019. There he successfully overcame three seeded players and went on to win the final against Serbia's Miomir Kecmanović 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
