Borna Coric: Croatian Baseliner and Giant-Killer

Croatian tennis pro Borna Coric was born on 14 November 1996 in Zagreb. He hit his first shots on court at the age of five with his father Damir. The Coric family also includes mother Zeljka and sister Bruna.

Coric names Goran Ivanišević and Rafael Nadal as his big idols from his youth. If Borna weren't a tennis player, he'd love to be a professional boxer. He calls former American heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson, whom he met at the 2016 ATP Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, his favourite sportsman. In his free time, Borna likes to relax by the pool.

Borna Coric's favourite surface is hard court, and he considers his backhand his strongest shot. In 2014, he was voted “ATP Newcomer of the Year.” After battling injuries, he picked up another award eight years later: “ATP Comeback Player of the Year.”

Borna Coric's ATP Wins Over Nadal, Federer and Zverev

Borna Coric already celebrated impressive success as a junior. After reaching the semi-finals at both the Australian Open and the French Open, he scored his biggest junior-level win in September 2013 at the US Open, beating Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final to claim the world number 1 junior ranking.

2013 marked Coric's first season on the ATP World Tour, as well as his debut for the Croatian Davis Cup team. Borna turned heads in the tennis world in 2014 at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, where he beat Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the quarter-finals of this ATP tournament, breaking into the ATP top 100 for the first time.

Another milestone in Borna Coric's career came in April 2017 at the ATP clay-court tournament in Marrakech, where he claimed his first ATP World Tour title in the final against Philipp Kohlschreiber, saving five match points along the way. In June 2018, he got the better of Alexander Zverev at the grass-court event in Halle and reached the final, where he celebrated a three-set win over Roger Federer and was subsequently ranked inside the ATP top 20.

After a string of injury problems and a long rehabilitation period, Coric announced his return with an impressive comeback at the ATP tournament in Cincinnati in August 2022. There, he beat Rafael Nadal and Cameron Norrie before also beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final to claim his first Masters 1000 title.

A Baseliner with a Powerful Backhand

Standing 188cm tall, the Croatian is regarded as a defensive baseliner with a powerful backhand. Borna was born left-handed but plays tennis right-handed. His outstanding footwork and the speed with which he moves around the court are truly impressive. His playing style is perfectly suited to long rallies from the baseline that can wear opponents down.

Borna Ćorić boasts a strong, precise serve that makes his service games far easier, meaning he rarely faces break points. Borna is frequently praised for his impressive mental strength in tight situations, often being compared to Novak Djokovic in this respect.
