Amanda Anisimova: US tennis star with Russian roots

Amanda Anisimova, an American tennis player with Russian roots, was born on 31 August 2001 in Freehold, New Jersey. Her parents come from Russia and emigrated to the USA in 1998. The family includes her mother Olga and her sister Maria, who lives in New York. Amanda speaks English and Russian. Since her breakthrough year of 2025 she has belonged to the very top of the world game: in 2025 she reached the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open, won two WTA 1000 titles and in January 2026 reached her career-high of number 3 in the WTA world rankings.

Amanda Anisimova hit her first tennis balls at the age of three, after moving to Miami with her parents. That is where she took up the sport, accompanying her sister to training every day. Her great tennis idols are Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Away from the court, music, running, writing and jet skiing are among her favourite leisure activities. She has a dog called Miley and loves going running with him on the beach.

Early milestones in Amanda Anisimova's tennis career

Amanda Anisimova was already celebrating major successes on court as a junior. In 2017 she went through the entire US Open girls' event without dropping a set and also won the final against Coco Gauff. Back in 2016, aged just 14 and with a wild card, Amanda entered the women's qualifying at the US Open, won her first match there and reached the second qualifying round. At the end of the 2018 season, after reaching the final of the Japan Women's Open, Amanda Anisimova was ranked inside the world's top 100 for the first time. Her 2019 season was highly successful: in Bogotá she celebrated her first WTA title after beating Australian Astra Sharma in the final.

Another career highlight came the same year at the French Open, where she reached the semi-finals of the Grand Slam in Paris after beating defending champion Simona Halep in the quarter-finals. She withdrew from the US Open following the sudden death of her father and coach Konstantin in August 2019. In 2022 Anisimova reached her first final since 2019 at the Melbourne Summer Set II. There she won the title in a thrilling three-set match against the Belarusian player Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Time out in 2023 and a strong comeback

In May 2023 Amanda Anisimova pulled the emergency brake: she announced an indefinite break from tennis and spoke openly about exhaustion and her mental health as the reasons. It was not until January 2024 that she returned to the WTA Tour at the tournament in Auckland, using a protected ranking. She found her way back to the top of the game within a few months – since 2024 she has worked with Belgian coach Hendrik Vleeshouwers, who was voted WTA Coach of the Year in 2024.

Amanda Anisimova's 2025 breakthrough: two Grand Slam finals and two WTA 1000 titles

The 2025 season was the best of her career. In Doha, Amanda Anisimova won her first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar Open with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jeļena Ostapenko. At Wimbledon she beat the then world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals and reached her first Grand Slam final, which she lost 0-6, 0-6 to Iga Świątek. Just a few weeks later she turned the story around: at the US Open in New York she beat Świątek in the quarter-finals and Naomi Osaka in the semi-finals, before losing the final to Sabalenka 3-6, 6-7. She finished the season by winning her second WTA 1000 title at the China Open in Beijing, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 against Linda Nosková, and reached the semi-finals at the WTA Finals.

In 2026 as well, Amanda Anisimova is one of the leading players on the WTA Tour. She reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Dubai, and in January 2026 she climbed to number 3 in the world rankings – her best placing to date. She is currently ranked number 10 in the WTA world rankings (as of 8 September 2026), which makes her one of the best players in the world.

Amanda Anisimova's style of play

The 180-centimetre right-hander is regarded as an aggressive baseline player with heavy groundstrokes off both the forehand and the backhand. Her strongest weapon on court is the two-handed backhand, with which she hits plenty of winners. Her flat forehand is also highly effective.

On centre court Amanda Anisimova shows excellent footwork. That is why her strengths come to the fore especially in longer rallies. On her opponent's serve, and above all on the second serve, she can counter with a powerful return. Amanda is currently one of the best returners in the women's game on the WTA Tour.
