    Paula Badosa: The Ambitious Spaniard with Serious Power

    Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa Gibert, known as Paula Badosa, was born on 15 November 1997 in New York City. She lives and trains in Barcelona, close to her hometown of Begur on the Costa Brava. Her big tennis idol growing up was Maria Sharapova. In her spare time, Paula Badosa loves to read and always packs books when she travels. She names “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom as her favourite book. Paula Badosa Gibert is multilingual, speaking English, Spanish and Catalan, and intends to learn even more languages.

    The ambitious 5ft 11in (1.80 m) Spaniard has been competing on the ITF Tour since 2012. She is right-handed and plays a two-handed backhand. Badosa Gibert is regarded as an aggressive player who loves to dominate rallies, takes plenty of risks and usually looks to finish points quickly. She names her serve as her strongest shot.

    Badosa Gibert took up tennis at the age of seven. She prefers playing on hard courts, which suits her fast, aggressive style perfectly, though she has also enjoyed success on clay. The Spaniard was already among the best juniors, winning the girls' singles title at the French Open in 2015.

    Another highlight of Paula Badosa's career came in November 2018, when she won the final at the ITF tournament in Valencia after five three-set victories. Paula Badosa also impressed on the WTA Tour, reaching the semi-final in Palermo in 2019, where she lost to Kiki Bertens. These results took her into the world's top 100 for the first time and earned her a place in the main draw at the 2020 Australian Open, where she was beaten in the second round by Petra Kvitova. Paula Badosa went even further at the 2020 French Open, reaching the fourth round and beating Sloane Stephens and Jelena Ostapenko along the way.
