Roberto Bautista Agut: Spain's Mr Consistency

Spanish tennis player Roberto Bautista Agut is very much one of the late bloomers of the ATP Tour. Born in Castellón de la Plana, the pro didn't reach the main draw of ATP or Grand Slam events for the first time until he was 23 — practically ancient compared with many of the young pros from the generations coming up behind him. The big breakthrough was also a while in coming. These days, though, Roberto Bautista Agut is unquestionably one of the tour's top players and, alongside compatriot Rafael Nadal, one of the flagbearers of Spanish tennis.

Challenger level first, then the ATP: Bautista Agut's early success

For a long time, Bautista Agut celebrated his biggest wins at Challenger level. In 2012 especially, he made a real statement, picking up several titles at once. And suddenly things started falling into place a level up, too: in Chennai, the Spaniard reached his first ATP final in 2013. He lost that final agonisingly close in three sets, but the spell had been broken. Bautista Agut had proven he could hang with the very best athletes on the international tour. At every Grand Slam that year, he at least reached the second round — picking up valuable experience along the way.

Just a year later came another eye-catching result: in the second round of the Australian Open, the Spaniard beat co-favourite Juan Martín del Potro in five sets and, following another win, reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Shortly afterwards came a very special clash in Madrid: playing in front of a home crowd, Bautista Agut faced eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the Masters semi-final. A few weeks later, in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, he then finally won his first ATP Tour title. After another tournament win in Stuttgart, Bautista Agut suddenly found himself among the top 20 players on the planet.

Wimbledon semi-final and world top 10: Bautista Agut reaches the top

In 2016, Bautista Agut reached his first Masters final, in Shanghai. On the way there, he knocked out defending champion Novak Djokovic, among others — a triumph that earned him plenty of attention, even though he would go on to lose the final in two sets to Andy Murray. Between 2016 and 2018, Bautista Agut won two titles every single year, consistently establishing himself among the very best players. He also delivered regularly at Grand Slam level, even if the very biggest success eluded him. In 2016 and 2017, though, he still reached the third round three times and the fourth round five times.

In 2019, Bautista Agut would then pull off something truly special: at the legendary Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, the Spaniard suddenly found himself in the semi-final after an impressive run through the draw. There he faced Serbia's Novak Djokovic once again, who this time proved too strong. Even so, the result took him up to No. 13 in the rankings, and shortly afterwards he even climbed into the top 10.
