    Grigor Dimitrov: Success Through Style

    Grigor Dimitrov is the most successful Bulgarian tennis player of all time. Thanks to his elegant playing style, he's often compared to Roger Federer. While the Bulgarian, born on 16 May 1991 in Haskovo, doesn't quite have the imposing trophy collection of an exceptional player like Federer, he's still made a name for himself with several major achievements. In 2017, for example, Dimitrov celebrated winning the ATP Finals.

    World Champion as a Teenager: Dimitrov Finds Success Early

    Grigor Dimitrov was already making headlines as a teenager: in 2006, for example, he won the unofficial U16 junior world championship. He also reached the junior doubles final at the US Open in 2007. Just a year later, he went on to win the junior tournaments at both Wimbledon and the US Open. Experts sensed it early: Dimitrov had everything needed for the big stage of tennis.

    Fittingly, the Bulgarian made his debut in 2008 at just 17 years old, at the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch. He went on to play several tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour, though he rarely got past the quarter-finals. But 2010 brought his first Challenger Tour titles, allowing Dimitrov to gradually climb the world rankings.

    ATP Finals Champion: Dimitrov Beats the Big Names

    Dimitrov celebrated his first Grand Slam match win in the first round of the 2011 Australian Open, breaking into the world's top 100 for the first time as a result. At Wimbledon, the Bulgarian also got past the first round, but was eliminated again shortly after, this time by Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It wasn't until 2014 that Dimitrov also made waves at the majors. At the Australian Open, he reached the quarter-final for the first time at the start of the season, having already won three titles beforehand in Acapulco, Bucharest, and London.

    The high point came at Wimbledon: Grigor Dimitrov reached the semi-final of the prestigious grass-court tournament with a straightforward quarter-final win over home favourite Andy Murray. There, he came out on the losing end against Novak Djokovic, but Dimitrov had suddenly arrived in the world's top ten. Riding a wave of confidence, he also caused a stir at the US Open, fighting his way through to the fourth round. The logical result: Dimitrov was voted Bulgaria's Sportsman of the Year for 2014.

    After a few mixed years, Dimitrov made an impressive comeback in 2017, reaching the semi-final at the Australian Open, where his run finally ended against Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard, however, needed five high-quality sets to reach the final. In Cincinnati, Dimitrov then celebrated his first Masters title. He also qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals for the first time, and won it on his first attempt, the biggest success of his career to that point. He ended the year with an outstanding world No. 3 ranking.

    Ups and Downs: Injuries and a New York Semi-Final

    After a disappointing 2018 and a fourth-round finish at the 2019 Australian Open, his career was slowed by shoulder problems, which forced the Bulgarian to withdraw from several tournaments. But at the 2019 US Open, he surprised the tennis world all the more: unseeded, he fought his way to the semi-final after a dramatic five-set win over Roger Federer, where he eventually lost to Daniil Medvedev. At the 2021 Australian Open, he reached the quarter-final, but the rest of the season was once again mixed. Until autumn 2021, he only managed to reach the second round in a handful of tournaments.

    In May 2023, after a five-year dry spell, he experienced a comeback, reaching the final in Geneva, though he lost it. His second final of the year came at the Paris Masters, but again he had to accept defeat. In early 2024, he finally rediscovered his old form, winning his second title since 2017 in Brisbane with a win over Holger Rune. Two further finals followed, underlining his return to form.
